California Business Venture 2009--The Brockman Insitute

Description of project: Hosted on the campus of California State University Long Beach during July 2009, approximately 100 high school students will participate in California Business Venture. Students will be randomly placed in groups of ten to twelve, and each group will act as a management team for a mock company that has been in business for one year. Each group begins the week with an equal 33.3% share of their industry’s market, and the same financial situation.
Through the use of a computer simulation, each student-led company will operate twelve quarters of business during the course of the week. These include production, marketing, and financial decisions, and are analyzed and altered, if necessary, each quarter. Each student-led company will have the benefit of a Company Advisor.
Potential benefits of project: Students will benefit from hands-on business experience, and will be better prepared to enter the workforce. Also, by experiencing life on a college campus for one week, students will be motivated to continue education beyond high school graduation.
How will benefits be determined? Each student will complete a pre & post program survey. This will help us measure the effectiveness of California Business Venture.
How will funds be allocated? A generous grant of $1,000 will provide 2 computers to run California Business Venture’s simulation (Toshiba Satellite Laptop, $584.99* each - 9 total computers needed). Each student-led company will benefit from the use of its own laptop. These laptops will be maintained and used repeatedly by future California Business Venture attendees.

Description of project: The Smart Board interactive system connects to a computer and a projector. A student is able to interact with computer materials and their fingers become the mouse. Anything done on a computer is now available to any child.
Potential benefits of project: Our students with physical limitations will now be able to receive multisensory stimulation, touch a whiteboard, and respond physically no matter what their limitations are.

One of the Fund Development Committee members asked about funding for the other computers and how they will proceed with just our funding. Below is Mr. Ferguson's reply:
The other computers are not funded as of today. We're still working hard on coming up with funding for the program. The way this year is going, we will most likely end up sharing what we have. We can work the student schedules around having access to the computer. Or we may ask volunteers to bring a few computers in for the students to use. This would be a good temporary solution until we can afford to have computers for each group in years to come.
